What is Hay fever and what treatments are available?
Hay fever, also known as allergic rhinitis, is an allergic reaction to pollen which is a fine powder from plants.
Hay fever season is usually between March and September – when the pollen count is at its peak.
1 in 4 people in the UK has hay fever which approximates to 16 million people in the UK who suffer from hay fever symptoms.
The most common symptoms of Hay fever include:
- sneezing
- coughing
- a runny or blocked nose
- itchy, red or watery eyes
- itchy nose, throat or roof of mouth
- headaches
Hay fever symptoms can last from a couple of weeks to even a couple of months!
There are a range of treatments available, starting from:
- antihistamine tablets,
- nasal spray (steroid)
- eye drops and finally
- the hay fever injection
