Long Covid/Post Covid-19 Syndrome

Long Covid/Post Covid-19 Syndrome

Covid-19 affects each person differently and most people will recover from Covid-19 symptoms within a few weeks however others will have symptoms which may last longer. This is known as ‘Post Covid-19 Syndrome’ or ‘long Covid’.

A recent published study “Symptom Duration and Risk Factors for Delayed Return to Usual Health Among Outpatients with COVID-19 in a Multistate Health Care Systems Network — United States, March–June 2020” conducted by indicate that 50% – 80% of patients continue to have symptoms and health concerns three months after contracting Covid-19. The full study can be found here https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7392393/

Also, a recent study “6- month consequences of Covid-19 in patients discharged from hospital: a cohort study” by Chaolin Huang, found significant long-term affects of Covid-19.

The study conducted by Chaolin Huang and colleagues describes a clinic follow-up, after 6 months, of a group of 1733 adult patients (48% women, 52% men; median age 57.0 years) with Covid-19 infection who were discharged from a particular hospital in Wuhan, China.

Some significant findings were as follows:

  • 63% were still experiencing fatigue/muscle weakness
  • 26% were still experiencing sleeping difficulties
  • 50% still had residual chest imaging abnormities
  • 23% were experiencing anxiety or depression
  • 56% of those who required non invasive and invasive mechanical ventilation during their hospital stay presented with impaired pulmonary function
  • 4% of this group were those required admission into the Intensive Care Unit
